When I was in high school, I always wondered what college life was really like. Are the girls really that hot, are the football games really that interesting, and is it anything like it is in the movies?

Fortunately, yes! College is everything I could have hoped for and more. You can study all day and party all night if you choose to and it is by far one of the most fun experiences of my life. It is something that I am sure I will have a connection with for the rest of my life.

This past weekend has been one my most enjoyable yet. It all starts Friday evening when I was calling around to see if anyone was going to do anything that night when I got a call from my friend Kyle. My friend Kris and I headed towards the party and we got ready for a fun and long night.

At the party we quickly find Kyle and find him playing asshole, we decide to join in but, the game had winded down and was over soon. We went outside to the patio where everyone was at and join in the festivities, free beer, free alcohol and you can never go wrong (most of the time). So after drinking some “Blue” and talking about crew (it was a crew party and I used to row) much to Kris’ annoyance (Kris never rowed). We decided to play some beer pong. First up were Kyle and his friend and when I tried to grab the other side of the table, two douchbags grabbed me and told me to wait for my own good. I didn’t want to start anything since I didn’t really know anybody and I honestly didn’t care so I just stood there and watched. One of them kept claiming he had won the last eleven games of beer pong he had played and told him I would bet two dollars he would lose, that’s right you heard me, two whole dollars! He agreed and I was left wondering what a bad bet I had made.

Well, the beer pong game was pretty exciting, even more so with the bet having been placed. Kyle and his friend took the lead and held it to last three cups, when the douchbags looked like they were going to pull off a comeback. Down two cups to one douchbags winning and me wondering why I had bet my two dollars. In one round Kyle’s friend sunk a ball and all of a sudden it was a tie game, douchbags missed and then Kyle sunk the final ball. Everyone watching cheered, and the douchbags watched as I took their money and showed it off in their face. Now I had money to go to Taco Bell.

With that we went outside to welcome are friends that we called up and went back inside to play some pong. I finally got to play and with my partner we start to eliminate the cups of our opponents. The unstoppable force that we were, we continued until my partner had to leave. I played another game but, it just wasn’t the same and so I quit and got ready to leave. Kris and I left soon after and went home to look forward to the game the next day.

The next day I woke up at 12:00, a little tired and bewildered but, knew the game was in just a couple of hours. I got dressed, checked my computer and got something to eat. An hour later, I called my friends and headed over to the Suwannee room. Having met up at the Suwannee room, we headed over to the game and watched as the Seminoles finally decided to play a game and finally did what they were supposed to do. Touchdown after touchdown, we celebrated and then left to hang out in our friends dorm and watched deal or no deal for about two to three hours and then decided to watch “road trip” a college movie of course. We laughed at people’s mistakes on deal or no deal and criticized the inaccuracies of “Road Trip” because if anyone knows from experience it’s a group of college freshman.

After the movie and never ending deal or no deal marathon we decide to play football even though it was one in the morning. On the way to get the football at my other friend’s dorm I got a call from my other friend Ryan inviting me to play some pong at his place, I told him I would go even though I had no plans to do so and we continued on our way to play football. We play football with some guys we find there and have a pretty good game.

While playing football there were people in the fountain and campus police came and told them to get out. They did and one of the guys we were playing with told me that same cop had just given him a ticket for who knows what. After campus police left the people who were in the fountain go back in and the policeman who they thought had left came storming back, apparently they were just getting some clothes out and we went back to playing our game. After a minute or two the cop noticed that the guy who is playing with us put a beer can by the street lamp. He quickly called us over and asked whose it was. When questioning the guy who confessed and us looking on very interested and our game permanently postponed. The kid pointed towards the fountain and yelled “Hey, that guy’s naked!” we turned around to look and sure enough on the other side of the fountain was some kid naked getting ready to get into the fountain. The kid just stood there streching even when he saw the cop. The cop who was holding the can of beer looked stunned. He just stood there for a second and then started marching over dropping the can of beer. I looked towards the guy who yelled the kid was naked and he was as stunned as the cop. I quickly told him to get out of here and I turned around to laugh with my friends, by the time I turned around I saw the kid halfway down the street running barefoot carrying his shirt. We laughed and noticed the kid who had gotten the ticket form before had bolted as well. The kids who had first gotten in trouble also took the opportunity to get away. We still stood there and looked on as the cop arrested the “naked guy” and saw two more cops come for backup. We saw the first cop tell them the same story I’m telling you and we couldn’t help but notice the similarities between this and almost any episode of Reno 911.

We laughed until the cops took the kid away and we stood there still laughing at what had just happened. After that I decided to go home having been wiped out from a very long but, fun and exciting weekend. I knew right after that, that my experience at college would be a fun and exciting one that I wouldn’t forget for the rest of my life.

Movie Review: King Kong

First off, a Merry Christmas to all of you, and congrats on making it to the end of the semester. It was hard work, and we deserve this break. And for all the Jews I offended in the first sentence, I will offend you even further: If Catholics invented an eight-day long holiday celebrating the Crusades around Yom Kippur or Rosh Hashanah, do you think people would be so damn polite as we're supposed to be towards you and your little celebration of an embellished period of religion-induced violence that just happens to fall during our high holy days? I didn't think so. And besides, eight out of ten American Jews celebrate Christmas anyway, so why don't we just drink our egg nog and you eat your coconut macaroons in the spirit of peace and harmony. Oy friggin' vey...

But I digress. Before I review King Kong, a couple of announcements, one having to do with school, another with this site. First, HW: Bio reading on classification (I think), and that might be it. Second, for all fans of Penny Arcade or Ctrl-Alt-Del.com, IBSMART will be producing its own comic strip starting next month. Think Family Guy, only nerdier and possibly more obscene (if either are even possible).

And now for King Kong. Your admin team (sans cp geek, who was in the Gainesville area visiting what Puppeteer calls his "pity school") watched King Kong, Peter Jackson's remake of Peter Jackson's favorite movie of all time. This film has been as highly touted as Brokeback Mountain, Munich, The Producers, and other films this winter. Indeed, we were truly expecting a film that would rival Jackson's excellent Lord of the Rings films, as some critics claim it is.

From those expectations, we were dissappointed. But that does not mean in any sense that King Kong is a bad movie, or even not worth watching. Watching King Kong was like watching The Passion of the Christ, in the sense that you knew that Peter Jackson was putting his heart and soul into every single frame of the film. In this day and age of cookie-cutter shlockfests where good directors have phoned it in on many movies, this is a great thing to see. But the trouble here comes with Peter Jackson's need for more and more frames to put his heart and soul into.

Let's give some perspective here: The original 1933 film was about 90 minutes long. This remake is about three hours and ten minutes, DOUBLE the length of the original. He has taken a one-dimensional romance/adventure story and turned it into a gigantic, hypercomplex character study, spending most of the "study time" looking at a CGI monkey and Naomi Watts (who, in a completely unrelated development, is ridiculously hot). I could understand a two-hour movie. Hell, I would sit through a two and half hour movie. But to get to hour three and watch Kong go ICE SKATING!!! We almost walked out of the theatre when that little scene came up. And since we're giving spoilers here, Kong dies. WHAAAA????!!!

So basically, way too long, and way too sappy. The animation in this movie is nothing short of unbelievable, and in case I didn't mention, Naomi Watts is really, REALLY hot. But King Kong, in the end, suffers from too much heart and soul when so much is completely unnecessary.

If you have no attention span, or have much better things to do (like we did), I do not recommend King Kong. It's a good movie, just not worth three hours of your Christmas season. Besides, the women are more useful this time of year at the mall than the movie theatre. Chauvinism never gets old!!

I have just come home at 20 past midnight after working seven hours at Winn-Dixie and going to the other side of town to wait two hours to take my dad home...where I wrote 1800 words of homework. I have seventeen journals due in four days, and a 2500 word paper to work on, and four exams, a one-act play to perform, and eight more hours of labour tomorrow. Merry freakin Christmas...

And a word about Brokeback Mountain. I have seen a trailer, and I will not see the film, as I refuse to be convinced that it is anything but a gay porno movie. Listen to the following lines:

Movie Review: Rent

This just in: I have discovered a Chris Columbus film that Chris Columbus failed to ruin.

Surprisingly, that film is the most mature and ambitious endeavor of his career, the film adaptation of Jonathan Larson's off-Broadway rock musical "Rent". Columbus, best known for such classic train wrecks as "Adventures in Babysitting" (starring Anthony Rapp, who would later perform in both the Broadway and film versions of "Rent") and the first two Harry Potter films, is put in charge of adapting one of the most successful non-Andrew Lloyd Webber rock musicals ever made, not to mention a multilayered series of love stories involving eight Bohemians from Manhattan (four of whom have HIV/AIDS, two of whom are gay, two of whom are lesbians, and one a transexual drag queen).

These and my much stronger interest in seeing "Walk The Line" (which Puppeteer will review soon) brought me to "Rent" with very low expectations. I really only went to spend more time with my sister, who thinks my leaving for college is a sad thing. Maybe it was low expecations. Maybe it was the fact that Rosario Dawson in a foxxy lady. Whatever it was, I was more than pleasantly surprised by "Rent".

The film opens with the musical's best-known song, "Seasons of Love" (how many minutes in a year?), where the ensemble cast (six of the eight being original cast members of the Boradway show) quickly blows you away with their outstanding vocal talents. The story follows a year in the life of eight starving artists on the Lower East Side of New York City. Each character has their own demons which they have to deal with, each relying on each other to get through drug addictions, evictions, AIDS, death and alienation. The actors do an outstanding job of handling their individual and group conflicts, giving a very real portrayal of the hard times that they are stuck in. And, as I was very glad to see, the vocals were absolutely fantastic, a great relief from other adaptations like "Phantom of the Opera" and "Jesus Christ Superstar", which are vocally disappointing, at best (though Webber is a hell of a lot harder to sing than "Rent").

I give "Rent" 3.5 out of 5 stars for a couple of personal reasons. It's not that I'm a homophobe, or that I have an irrational fear of people with AIDS, or consider drug addicts to be pathetic, unreliable human beings (though the latter is not completely untrue). I had a problem with the general lifestyle that "Rent" seems to promote in some of its lyrics. It disturbs me that the tagline for the film is "No Day But Today", a song that is sung periodically, saying that the characters should not be worried about the future, the consequences of their actions. Why don't they just sing "Why wear a raincoat when you're already wet?", I kept thinking when this song came on throughout the film. I also had a problem getting to like Angel, the drag queen character (ironically, the actor who plays him won a Tony Award for his role on Broadway). The writers want you to like all eight of the lead characters, and to see the reality of each of their relationships. Angel is supposed to be an innocent, caring person, a loving man who dies a tragic death from the onslaught of HIV. I saw him as manipulative, libertine and loud, not funny in any way. In fact, as his body falls apart, I was quietly thinking "And you wonder why they called it the Gay Death back then..."

What I basically had a problem with "Rent" was the fact that I see nothing redeeming about the Bohemian movement. I can't say anything positive about people who throw off the burden of society, reap the consequences of promiscuous, irresponsible behavior, and then beg for society's help when they can't deal with the results of their actions. Unlike the other characters, who were actively fighting to stay alive in a world that had neglected them, Angel simply ignored society, and ignored the consequences of his lifestyle. As a result, his death had no effect on me, and I couldn't think of a reason why he didn't have it coming. God said "Love thy neighbor," but He also said "Keep it in thy pants."

Ironically, the death of my least favorite character brought the characters into a more genuine light, and gave them all a better chance to express their individual conflicts. And, of course, there is plenty of time for some great musical numbers, like "Glory", "Tango Maureen", "Out Tonight", "La Vie Boheme", "I'll Cover You (Reprise)" and "Your Eyes". Broadway performers Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal give what are simply breakout performances, while Rosario Dawson is also outstanding as a HIV-positive stripper.

In short, give "Rent" a shot. It's a lot of fun, and you might even like the message, depending on how you were potty-trained (all who know anything about Freudian psychoanalysis insert nerdish laugh here).

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The Boy Who Lived has been murdered by Mike Newell and Steve Kloves.

All the critics are idiots, and so are most of you readers. I went to see Goblet of Fire on Saturday morning, on a weekend where that pile of trash netted Warner Bros. over $100 million from pea-brained simps (aka small children) and gullible film scholars (i.e. your IBSMART admins). Maybe it is the writer in me that demands far more integrity from an adaptation of a book than the average person. Maybe it is the fact that the piss-poor cinematography gave me a migraine headache for the rest of the day.

Whatever it is, this movie unequivocally sucked (a) major cock(s). Mike Newell, director of romantic comedies and romanticized back-alley abortion flicks, failed to even earn a pew at the grand desk chair of Godfather Alfonso Cuaron, director of Prisoner of Azkaban (and a mexicano sucio tambien...y tu mama tambien). I have read Goblet of Fire twice. Master Puppeteer read it three times, and we were both begging for the movie to slow down. About 150 pages of text are covered in about a half hour at the film's opening. Lord Voldemort's appearance, the climax of the novel, is a footnote. Ralph Fiennes, the only high point of the film as Voldemort, was but a minor character. If you haven't read the books (you idiot), you would not know from the films that Voldemort is an archetypal force that drives the progression of nearly all of the major characters in the books (he's also Puppeteer's idol and god).

Hence the principal problem of all of the films. Only Azkaban (the weakest book in the entire series) was successful in conveying the style and intent of Rowling's works. J.K. Rowling (the only relevant woman writer of note), like any quality writer, has primary structural and stylistic purposes to each of her novels. Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix are meant to develop and advance the emotional and motivational spectra of the primary and supporting characters. The films, made out of financial expediency rather than artistic dedication, fail to achieve this ends. In terms that even IB seniors can comprehend, the films have engaged in coitus more ferarum on J.K. Rowling and her children (not to mention the books...and not in a metaphorical sense).

So, in conclusion, stay the hell away from Goblet of Fire. Watch "Walk the Line" or "Jarhead". Hell, watch "One Night in Paris" if you have to. You're watching the same damn thing in Goblet of Fire, for a lot less money.

Movie Review: Jarhead

I have a feeling that this will be a running feature on IBSMART, or at least I hope so. You see, we in the IBSMART staff are movie conoisseurs as well as pathetic video-gamers. In fact, Puppeteer and myself will soon begin drafting a Wikibook on the history of film (Sam Scovill, if you read this, we need you!!). And on weekends, while most enjoy themselves with booze and boobs, we usually head to the movies and watch the few good flicks that have come down the pike this year (i.e. The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Episode III, Batman Begins, The Brothers Grimm....stay away from that piece of junk).

Of course, as most of you have noticed from our foaming at the mouth at the mere mention of the title, we went to see 'Jarhead' the other night. I had consumed half a gallon of coffee in the span of an hour earlier that day, and was quite wired (the testosterone raging in me did not help). I forgot that Camino Real took you to US 41 and not 301, and Puppeteer and myself just barely made it on time to the 9:45 showing.

Not that any of that changed my view of the film. Let me put it this way: 'Jarhead' is one HELL of a movie. In almost all aspects, it is a cinematic masterpiece, a true work of art. The film is a character study of the finest caliber, an emotional roller-coaster guided by the able hands of director Sam Mendes, photography director Roger Deakins, and a superstar cast of actors such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jamie Foxx, to name only a few.

The reviews for this film have not been as glowing as mine, on the whole. While all have said that it is very well done, most have complained about the writing and how it is excessively heavy and plodding. They are right here; the writing is probably the weakest part of the film, suffering mainly from an apparent need to reference all of the great war films with visual homages to "Full Metal Jacket", 'MASH' and 'All Quiet on the Western Front', along with creating stock supporting characters based in personalities from'MASH', 'Apocalypse Now', and others.

But in that lack of creativity in those scenes and characters, one can also observe a groundwork being laid for the main characters (namely Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard) to advance their progressions. Some say 'Jarhead' is 'Full Metal Jacket' set in Iraq. I've also read comparisons to 'Platoon'. I would rather compare it to 'All Quiet', a much better war film (IMHO, the best war film ever made), and a truly honest character study of men who are forced into a war that is completely opposite to the one promoted by their peers.

The above theme is the catalyst for the breakdowns of all the characters in the film, breakdowns that can take as little as one scene or as long as the entire film to come about. Most of the action is set during Operation Desert Shield, when coalition forces massed in Saudi Arabia for several months prior to the invasion. Gyllenhaal's voice-over talks in great detail about the isolation of that time, and how masturbation becomes an all-too-normal part of life, among other things (and ladies, you get to see him in a G-string in this part of the movie). He nearly cracks up himself in a heart-breaking scene where he threatens to kill one of his buddies (the first time I cried in a war film).

It is also in this part of 'Jarhead' where we watch a scene that encompasses the emotional roller-coaster that is the film. I will call it simply "The Deer Hunter" scene, and it deals with Dear John letters that soldiers get in war, and it runs the emotional gamut from camaraderie to disgust to hysterical comedy and finally to sadness and deprivation. It is unbelieveably well-done, if not extremely hard to watch (I have no clue how the movie kept an R rating with that scene).

The film as a whole is tough to watch, but it is in the end a rewarding experience. The cinematography is simple, honest, and utterly breathtaking. There are camera cuts that simply send your jaw dropping to the floor in their beauty and brilliance. The direction of Sam Mendes is clear, precise, and caring.

But what makes the otherwise weak writing, and ultimately the movie, stick with you, is the acting, specifically the work of Gyllenhaal and especially Peter Sarsgaard. Their characters are a scout-sniper team that grow into a close, brotherly friendship, with Troy (Sarsgaard) serving as a strong emotional rock for the erratic Tony (Gyllenhaal). Gyllenhaal's transition from boy to man, soldier to civilian is nothing short of brilliant.

For those who don't know him yet, Peter Sarsgaard is quite simply the greatest actor of his generation. His soft, empty eyes and weak, handsome face have a boyish nature that simply creates an unbelievable presence on camera. His character is rich and complex, with real flaws and weaknesses that Sarsgaard subtly hints at and places in our minds throughout the film. In an act of sheer artistic genius, Sarsgaard spends the entire film preparing the audience for his own breakdown at the end of the film. No dialogue, no gesture is wasted in building the profound emotional power that the progression of his character brings to 'Jarhead'. It is acting at its finest, in its most truthful and honest state, culminating in a truly heart-breaking conclusion that, in the hands of a lesser actor, would come off as contrarian and cartoonish. If he does not get a Best Supporting Actor Oscar next year, I will throw a canniption fit like never seen in human history.

In short, 'Jarhead' is outstanding, though not for anyone with a low tolerance for rough language, disturbing images, and excessive male nudity and sexual content. If you think you can take it, go see it. You'll be a better moviegoer for it.

Rumors! Conjectures! Hearsay! All lies!
Let the truth be told and I will tell it!

In HoA today we all expected a test which would be difficult and hard beyond our wildest imaginations, but to the amazement to many they breezed through the hardest test of the year in 20-30 minutes. Let me tell you what happened and dispel the rumors which have polluted the school. First off, this all started during the weekend when we all found ourselves studying for a test for which we were all not prepared for. Many people decided to study in groups and/or use tests from previous years to get prepared. As fate would have it more people studied from the old tests for this Chapter then previous chapters, the people who had tests also coincidently worked in groups with others and/or had time to study in first period(english had substitute). So when we get the tests in 3rd period many are amazed to find the tests that they were using as mere tools hours before was now set right in front of them.

Though many of you who don't take HoA would say yeah but, that's cheating don't know that we were allowed to use tests from previous years by our teacher. However, the test we study from and the test we actually take is never the same and can only be used as a tool to study for this one. Nobody spread the tests knowing it was the test we were to be given and nobody passed out answer keys.

Then to the amazement of many in 6th period they found out that the test would be the same one they had studied before and took them out and spread the word about the test. By 6th period everyone knew about the test and anyone who had not seen the test were angry that they had not seen it. They thought this was a conspiracy which they were not a part of and were mad that they were not gonna get as good of a grade as those who did. Whoever it was who told the teacher that it was cheating and that people were spreading the tests and answer keys before hand are misinformed and should stop spreading lies.

When I Grow, Old Age is a luxury that I can hardly wait to obtain. When I join the ranks of the elderly, I plan to lead an exciting life. I refuse to spend my golden years playing never-ending games of Bingo and having Sunday brunches as the highlight of my week. Instead, I plan to use to advantages of being senile in truly mischievous manner. When my age reaches the 70's, the fun will begin. No more will I waste precious moments going 25 in the 25 mile-per-hour zone; rather, I will put the petal to the metal. 50! 60! 70! 100! I will race my way along the back-roads of society and leave skid marks as a sign of my passage. If, or when, a friendly, neighborhood officer of the law pulls me over, I would have a slew of excuses only available to people my age, such as: "I couldn't read the speed sign, or the speedometer for that matter!" I could always use the sympathy card: "Officer, can't you see that I am dieing!" What kind of cop could write a ticket to a desperate old man? The answer lies between zero and none. The roads would then belong to the only group of people who can catch no wind in their hair. After my age breaks the 75 years barrier, I will become a lord of tales. We have all heard a story from one of these lords during our lifetime. They normally come from withered old men who enjoy talking about their past; even if most of the time their stories are so incoherent, they might as have spoken in a foreign language. When I tell my stories, however, insanity will be their theme and imagination their plot. The stories I tell will be of wars that never happened, of tragedies and horrors that are such blatant fabrications that denying them would be fiendish. I will recognize a passing stranger and insist that we had fought together on a distant battlefield in World War III. I will ask them how their battalion had ever made it out of the Australian deserts, and then scurry-off with a friendly, "I'd love to talk more, but I have to be on the moon in an hour." Another benefit of age is the ability to act disgruntled. A seeming bewildered old man can validate his bizarre behavior with sympatric plea of ignorance. When I grow old, I do not plan to pay for any household produces I will need. Instead, I will wear baggy clothes to the supermarket and attempt to steal any staple within my grasp. I will cramp toothpaste bottles in my socks, shoes behind my back, and a cereal box near my stomach; even if I throw a hip in the process. When the store manger accuses me of shoplifting, I will put on a face of utmost shock as I pretend to realize that I wasn't in my kitchen after all. Perhaps after a quick pat-down they will let me go on account of my senility. Then I would speed off, going 90 while munching my free snickers bar I had hidden under my cap. The benefits of age are being squandered by today's senor-citizens. We find them asleep on park benches, slow while behind the wheel, and dreary at bingo night. Rest assured, when my day comes to fill the ranks of the walking dead, I will be living the good life. Although my body will age, my spirit will only grow younger.

Hangin' Em Up...

There is HW in this post, don't worry. You'll just have to do a lot of scrolling through and reading. For once, you will have to read a post from me that is actually very serious and potentially tear-jerking. It is a lesson about life, letting go, being a man, and learning how to deal with men. Here we go...

As you can see from the sports cliche that is my subject line, I am now retired. As of about 5:05 PM Thursday afternoon, I have officially left the ranks of the RHS Cross Country Team. After four years of dedicated service (two on the varsity team in some form, one year as a captain), I am no longer a member of a team that for three years had been one of the most enjoyable parts of my life.

But I am not sad or upset about this, or not as upset as I perhaps should be. In fact, by the way in which I have left my sport, you would not believed that I really cared about running in the first place, that I felt that I was leaving a close, devoted second family, closing an oh-so-wonderful chapter of my life that I will cherish forever. Rather, I am leaving it with feelings of bitterness, indignance, anger, and ostracism. Rather than loving this last year of running, I have instead lost any and all pride in calling myself a member of this team, all satisfaction in being a captain of a confederacy of divas and underachieving booze whores.

I am leaving without fanfare, without a tearful goodbye to or from my fellow teammates, some of which I have ran with for four years. I will not run with the varsity runners or attend the district, regional or state meets to cheer on my teammates. I will not bother to even speak with most of my teammates ever again, most notably my fellow boys team co-captains. I was not expecting much more acknowledgement of my departure from most of my runners anyway.

And guess what? I couldn't care less. Why? Because I was not part of the team this year. Hell, calling us a team is a stretch this season. In my twelve years of playing many different team sports, I have never seen a team's emotional and social discourse become hijacked by a small clique of players as thoroughly as this one. About five runners (one of whom didn't even work out with the team, save for jacking off her whipped co-captain boyfriend on weekends) took all of the emotional and social life of the team and poured it into their own social and emotional lives, leaving the rest of the team on the outside looking in. This season was all about them and their lives, impressing their own battles into our own personal and team struggles, and marginalizing the latter in the process. This inner circle, this vanguard, this "pinnacle of elitism", completely and totally compromised the unity of this team in its efforts to make themselves seem popular, unattainable and meaningful.

Their hedonistic forays into teenage dramas dragged us into the dregs of human behavior. For a team known for wacky behavior, this team set a new standard for classless and despicable acts of misbehavior that cannot be justified with a simple "Boys will be boys" cliche. Taking a dump in a forest is one thing. Pressuring a freshman to show girls his dick on school grounds? Taking pictures of another teammate's large cock? Forcing a bus driver to pull over on I-275 to tell our devoted vanguard to shut up? Screaming "Take it to the hole" during an awards ceremony (at a meet which our school hosted!)? No excuse. No fucking excuse.

Webster, you were a captain, you say. Why didn't you do something about it? Why didn't you call your teammates out on this? I wish I could. A few weeks ago, I found out that I did not have the power that my position implies. Coach Means had me pick the run that we would do for an easy 3-4 mile workout. I declared the route, which the team did not like. If I was as important as I was told I was by my own teammates when they made me a captain, they would have listened to me. Five minutes later, I ran the route I picked, while the entire team ran another route.

I was the most viciously-bullied kid in my elementary school. I have been verbally abused in any way that you can imagine and more. But I have never, ever felt more insulted or humiliated than I felt that day. That day was the straw that broke my back, the time that I knew I was not wanted or needed on this team anymore.

And so I have left, without a bang, without any tears, and without any requests for pity. I never thought I would say that I, in the end, don't owe anything to that party hotline that moonlights as a cross country team. I don't owe my vanguard a Goddamned thing for their contributions to fucking up this team. And thus I am putting this team out of my life. The good times, the wonderful times, the shitty times and everything in between, will be purged from my world.

Except for the one person to which I owe for all of those good times. Say what you want about Coach Means as an Economics teacher. I never had him, so your criticisms are meaningless to me. All I can say is that he is one of the finest men you will ever meet, one the most compassionate, caring, and dedicated men you may ever know. In this world, good decent men like Jason Means are far too hard to find. Slow as I was when I started, and slow as I am still, I caould always count on Coach Means to still treat me as part of the team, as the experienced senior that I was this season. If it wasn't for his unyielding support of every runner he has ever coached, he would not be the successful that he is today. For his kindness, his dedication to his team and his runners, and all around decency, I cannot thank Coach Means enough.

Old runners never die, they just fade away. I will still run in my spare time. In fact, I hope to have run with the bulls in Pamplona along with the Boston Marathon by my 30th birthday. I love working out, and I truly need the endorphins to take the edge off of rough days (normally when people start getting bitchy, they need to get laid. I just need to go for a run...). But for a few weeks, I am going to take some time off and enjoy some good old fashioned laziness, and perhaps even reminisce about the good times. I may even cry a little. Who knows? It may hit me at some point. But for now, all I can say is goodbye. The best I can do for myself is to at least try to let go, and get on with my life. The tears of loss can come later, at least until I give out homework.

Yes, folks, our EEs are officially turned in, along with a lot of our college apps and other assorted busy work. We have done the impossible, and will soon be told we're not working hard enough (hence two HL Math IAs soon to come for slackers like me). We have no new assignments to speak of that I can think of. Can you believe it? I have been sitting at my computer for a half hour, listening to Casting Crowns and staring at my completed math homework, wondering what in the heck I should be doing right now!

Savor it, and listen to Casting Crowns if you like good music with a message (What if the family turned to Jesus/and stopped asking Oprah what to do?!). Future HW updates will resume when the rapeage recommences.

Yes, you. You sick fucker. On Wednesday morning I emerged from my girlfriend's building by U.N. Plaza to find that you had sawed the tops off both the sparkplugs on my motorcycle. At the time, I had no idea why anyone would do that. Other than the sparkplugs, the bike was untouched. Some kind of bizarre vandalism? A fraternity prank gone awry? I had no idea. All I knew is that I looked like a huge douchebag riding the Muni to work in a padded motorcycle jacket and helmet.

Because the bike was immobilized I got a $35 street sweeping ticket that night. Thursday I had it towed to the shop ($45) where they replaced the sparkplugs and the boots ($50 including labor). They explained to me that "people" - I use the term loosely here - like you break off the tops of spark plugs and use the porcelain tubes to smoke crack. As an engineer and former MacGyver fan, in a way I think this is kind of cool. But then I remember that I just paid $100 for YOUR crackpipes, and I get angry again.

Crackhead, it was really good to have my bike back though. I rode home from the shop with a couple of spare sparkplugs and a smile on my face. I figured the next time I parked at my girlfriend's place overnight I would have to buy some crackpipes and tape them to my bike as a peace offering. Overall, I wasn't that upset. Despite having to ride the bus for three days and dropping a hundred bones at the shop, I had gained some fascinating knowledge, a new set of sparkplugs, and a pretty funny anecdote about how fucked up you are, and how our paths once crossed briefly in the night.

But you couldn't just let sleeping dogs lie, could you Crackhead. You couldn't just stay in on Friday, watch Letterman through the window of a home electronics store and then call it a night. You couldn't rest on your laurels. Two porcelain sparkplug crackpipes just wasn't enough for you, was it Crackhead? You just had to come back for more.

This morning, a scant fifteen hours after I rode it out of the shop, I found my motorcycle violated once again. This time you only took the right one - maybe you were having an off night. At least this time I had a spare sparkplug and the tools to fix it - or so I thought - having ordered a 73-piece toolset from SEARS.com last week. But no, the sparkplug socket in my new toolset was for American sparkplugs. So I had to go down to the neighborhood Ace hardware. They had an 18mm socket that would fit over my sparkplug, but it was for a 1/2" drive ratchet. My toolkit only has 1/4" and 3/8" ratchets. So I had to buy a 1/2" ratchet along with the socket. Even though the clerk took pity on me and gave me the senior citizen discount (I'm 25) it still cost me $22 all told. Now, you might say that I should have just gotten a 3/8"-to-1/2" drive adaptor instead of springing for the whole ratchet. And to that I say "Shut the hell up, Crackhead, I'm not finished. And besides, I was eventually going to buy a 1/2" ratchet anyway so it's probably not worth it to take it back now."

OK, now I'm rambling. But the point is, Crackhead, that you have done me wrong. Now, I get that you love crack. That is totally understandable. I've heard it is really fun, at first, and quite addictive. What I don't understand is,

YOU ARE A CRACKHEAD. WHY DON'T YOU OWN A CRACKPIPE?

I am an engineer. Do you ever see me shaking down bums in the Loin for a calculator and sliderule? No, you don't. Because engineering is the main thing I do, I went and bought myself a calculator. The main thing you do is crack. How do you get by without a crackpipe? The other crackheads must clown on you non-stop. I mean, the fucking saw you used to saw off my sparkplugs is probably worth five or ten bucks. Why not sell or trade it for a crackpipe? You really haven't put much thought into this, have you?

Please, Crackhead, please don't tell me you sold your crackpipe to buy crack. Even a stupid crackhead such as yourself couldn't possibly be that stupid.

I've decided that taping crackpipes to my motorcycle would be tantamount to appeasement. You have crossed a line, Crackhead - specifically California Street. You have come onto my own street and you have desecrated that which I hold dear. You have stolen from me, and you have caused me to spend the last half hour writing this post instead of engineering shit, and it is concievable, if not likely, that my boss could find out about this and fire me. I am hella pissed at you dude.

Here are my options as I see them:

1. Write a note saying that I have coated both of my sparkplugs in rat poison and tape it to my bike at night. You can thank Tim for that one, it was his idea.

2. Don't write a note, but just coat both sparkplugs in rat poison. This is probably closer to a punishment that would fit your despicable crime. I'm sure this is super illegal and shit, but it's not like anyone is going to miss you, Crackhead. Don't fool yourself.

3. Wait in an alley near my bike armed with my new stainless steel mirror-finish Ace Professional brand 1/2" drive socket wrench, my 18mm sparkplug socket, and my searing rage. It's pretty heavy and well balanced. I am not a large man, but I am angry.

In conclusion, Crackhead, why don't you just do both of us a favor and buy yourself a crackpipe? It will both enhance your crack smoking experience and save me a lot of time and felony assault charges. Think about it.

A World Driven By Ignorance

The recent "scandal" with our editor has led me to reflect on and doubt certain aspects of our society. Everyone who knows our editor, in the three dimensional world that is found outside the confines of this virtual forum of intellectual banter, know that his post meant no harm. I find it highly ironic, if not increasingly ignorant, how the subject of racism is considered such a taboo. It is the general consensus (or so I hope) that racism in itself is an ignorant and malevolent practice that only reflects the bestial nature of humanity. This, however, has not always been the opinion of the drone-like masses and as such; has caused people of different racial, religious, or ethnic backgrounds to suffer and be submitted to the will of others. The United States is a prime example of such a nation. Interestingly enough, after federal laws were implemented the concept became such a taboo that it is not considered part of proper decorum. Thus comes the irony. I suppose it is not common knowledge (or else this wouldn't occur) that by making a subject taboo one emphasizes it. It is my opinion that the best way to remove an ideological belief from society is to diffuse it in the society itself. Perhaps the best method to do this is through comedy and standardization. Systems like Affirmative Action, originally implemented to level the playing field among ethnicities, only help to aggravate and instigate further problems. I am not preaching that they be removed (being a minority myself I am looking forward to exploiting it), but they should definitely be reformed so that they may adjust to a more modern and globlalized American society.

I, myself, do not make a distinction amongst humans due to their race, religion, or ethnic group (I am convinced that all of humanity is ignorant and self-destructive). Thus I am greatly annoyed when problems are blamed on such petty things as skin pigments or their choice in deity. This post is not aimed at any single group. All sides are at fault in my opinion. Whites blame blacks; blacks blame whites; and both blame Hispanics- all are equally wrong. It is the innate ignorance of humanity to fear what is difference and segregate everything into groups (even though technically speaking there is only one human race- homo sapiens sapiens). I sincerely hope that globalization aids in the dissipation of racism (although I fear it may further aggravate it). I apologize for turning a post originally meant to justify the actions of our editor into a long and perhaps boring intellectual rant. This, however, is a problem that personally aggravates me which I would like to help resolve. If this post can be my only contribution, so be it.

(I would like to apologize in hindsight for circumventing our editor's authority. I did what I thought was best for him and the blog. Fearing the potential repercussions that I thought he would face, I deleted his last post. I do not regret my actions, and I will live without my admin status, which has been revoked. I do not hold anything against The_New_Kid for that; frankly, it was not because of him that I deleted the post. Rather, it was the unfortunate manner in which readers reacted which worried me more than the content of the post.

I will still be permitted to post for the time being. I am thankful for that. I only hope that we in the IBSMART Team will remain vigilant and sensible in considering the content of our posts. Yes, it was the Saturday edition, the edition that nobody reads. But people aren't exactly crawling out of bed to read the Suncoast Community Central section of the Thursday paper to read Jake Welch either.

That's right, folks, my response to his article made the editorial page of the Tribune. Here is the unedited version of it (not very different from the published version, just a few words changed here and there):

In response to Jacob Welch's column "'Old School Student' lost in the ranks":

On the problem of course offerings, students are not so much victims of administrative betrayal as they are of financial limitations, not to mention their own apathy. Classes such as Latin were removed from Riverview's curricula greatly because there was little student demand to take it, or at least not enough to set aside taxpayer dollars to restart the class and hire more teachers.

As students, we are given a system to work with as best we can. It is our responsibility to take advantage of the educational opportunities that are given to us. Most high schools, Riverview included, do their best to work with all students to give them the chance to take the classes that they need to succeed in their prospective careers. In the end, however, it is the students' responsibility to take advantage of those opportunities.

Finally, I want to respond to your comments about students in the IB Program. As an IB student, your remarks are baseless and offensive. I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth; nor were the children of immigrants, fallen Vietnam veterans, and single mothers. These are some of the hardest-working and most humble kids I have ever had the privilege of calling classmates. If you don’t think we deserve our class ranks as much as you deserve yours, I challenge you to take on our curriculum, to work until the wee hours of the morning for weeks on end year around, participate in numerous extra-curricular activities, write Extended Essays, and complete countless Internal Assessments. Then you will have the first hand experience to tell us if IB students should or should not be included in "grade-related matters".

IB Smart PWNS Jacob Welch

For too long now Jacob Welch has been writing an article every month in the Ram Page. Now as bad as the monthly article was, someone (crazy I guess) decided to let him write a bi-weekly column at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Now in his second column for the paper he wrote one of the most retarded articles I’ve ever read. With this article Jacob Welch went a little too far and I decided that Jacob had to be told what’s what. For too long now Jacob has said whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted and no one’s put a stop to it. Now I don’t know why this idiot keeps writing since he’s not good at it and why hasn’t anyone ever told him he sucks? So too fully understand the idiocy that is Jacob Welch we will analyze his article and try to figure out what is this guy really thinking or not as the case may be?

In the very first paragraph Jacob says that we humans are “ignorant” because most of us do not know of AIDS, global warming, overpopulation, or thinning ozone layer. Maybe it’s me but, I think everyone knew about that. You didn’t have to take AP environmental Science to learn that you ignorant prick all you have to do is watch CNN.

Oh yeah Jacob, I love your one sentence paragraphs. No supporting sentences, no arguments, no bull, just get straight to the point. I love it!

I guess Jacob can foresee the future too. He somehow knew that he would “master” Latin. Oh and by the way Latin does not contain every root of every word in the English language, it’s not even a romance language, dumbass!

Then we get to the part on IB. For some reason Jacob really hates us and I don’t know why. Maybe he didn’t get accepted in or just resents smart people. Doesn’t matter to me, all I know is that he fucked with the wrong group and we’re not going to take his shit anymore.

He calls us the “pinnacle of elitism” in a public school setting, despite the fact that you don’t pay your way into IB or get accepted in on your family’s status. You get accepted in on GPA and test grades and not everyone who applies gets in. We are according to Jacob snobby and vain, not because that is how we have become but, because Riverview has trained us to be that way. Let me tell you something Jacob, if I’m vain or snobby it’s because I choose to be not because a school has trained me to be.

We think of ourselves only as students who have challenged ourselves with the most academic classes at school and if we think we’re better then the average student academically it’s because we are. IB not only has the hardest classes at school it includes AP in much of its curriculum. I personally have already passed one AP exam and know of many students who take as many AP classes as regular students do and we’re doing IB at the same time.

Then to make it worse right at the end he blames IB kids for his school rank. Now he really pisses me off. He's blaming everyone other then himself for his own grades. He now contradicts himself when at the beginning of the article he said he wanted to get some "easy college credits."

You can't have it both ways man. You either work hard and get a good rank or you slack off and get a poor one. Don't blame IB for your responsibility.

So go take your crappy writing elsewhere because I’m getting tired of it and so is the rest of the school. And from now on for every Jacob’s letter which I find you, are again talking out of your ass I will write a rebuttal here.

The recent events in New Orleans only show that no matter how powerful any nation claims to be it is still vulnerable to economic and social disarray. Tragic as the natural catrastophe may have been, it is no excuse for people to behave as they have. This only proves that the human race is in no shape capable of ruling themselves. It also shows how weak and fragile our economy really is. In today's world power is no longer measurable in the size of one's nuclear arsenal but rather in the economic hold one has in the world. Perhaps our greatest contender in the field of economics are our communist friends to the east. The PRC is steadily increasing their economy and power every year, they now have huge monopolies in production companies. Cheap resources and cheap labor makes their products the primary choice for capitalist nations. Their monopoly even extends past our realm of existance into that of virtual reality. The Chinese now have the upper hand in many online business, including online gaming. It won't be longer until the chinese ascend to superpower status and match the power of the US. My advice: learn Mandarin.

Well today was a normal day not much due and not much to do in classes I really don't know if I got any homework at all but o well in between clases is a good time to start

Well anyways this post is shout to a special friend of us 4 the adminds here (since i'm the only 1 with balls here i have to post it), we'll call this person "Skye" just to keep the person's name a secret. Well so like any normal weekend I, Master Puppeteer, webster04 and The_New_Kid were having a halo nite ( is lotz of fun because they all suck except me, scores where like 50 killz to 9,7 and 5), suddently "marie" with a big ego challenges me to play an online strategy game (starcraft) to c who the better person is, well before we start Master Puppeteer laughs at me and foretells my damnation, but like always i accept the challange; the outcome was me as the winner and "Skye" as the pwned loser. PWNED !!!!!!!

After a few weeks of constant whining and shameless self-promotion, everyone's favorite self-appointed club president is now a contributor to IB Smart!

Our little secret: On a global political compass I am in the "Libertarian Left" quadrant of political thinking. Yet I am somehow a president of the Teenage Republicans (don't get angry, my mom gives me the same incredulous look when I call Sean Hannity a tool and that Osama bin Laden hates us for what we do rather than who we are). Don't worry, my reactionary friends, the club is in good hands, and we could use some more members (and a little bit of corporate sponsorship money to get us into those $500-per-plate fundraisers wouldn't be too shabby either).

My fellow team members will initiate emotional discussions with me in this space and try to make me appear like another overzealous, excessively idealistic, fundamentally religious nutjob. While I am a very conservative Catholic (who just happens to support the canonization of Martin Luther), I do not have a drop of idealism in me, and when it comes to politics, I feel that there's no point in having principles, especially because the politicians we elect don't have them either. True?

But enough of my depressing talk. I'm told that I'm a lot more fun to listen to when I'm trying to be funny rather than being serious(maybe someday I'll publish "The Hankie Files" to prove this point). SAT'S - May 11 is late registration deadline for June 6
HOA - Read packet and stuff for Mexican Revolution
Biology - More to come for help with labs
Calc AP is this Tuesday (May 3),
Chem AP is next Tuesday (May 10). Bring photo ID and get there on time, or you won't get in. Seriously.-
Minor English Orals start Thursday (May 5), check his door for your time.
TOK presentations also start this week, be ready.
If you need help with the Bio lab, search for "Fruit fly cross" or your specific cross followed by the same. (i.e. "apterous x sepia fruit fly cross") There are hundreds of sites to help you with hypotheses, procedure, results, etc. Be resourceful and get it done, it's due May 9. (As far as we can figure)

WMD = BULLSHIT

Lets not kid ourselves, we all know why we invaded Iraq and it damn sure wasn't because of WMD's. It was because of Oil and Saddam Hussein. What's done is done however, and we must now focus on the future, the draft is coming to ignore it we be to become ignorant. More then 30% of our troops will not re-enlist and recruitment numbers our down and our casualties are only getting higher 1,500 dead and 10,000 wounded and although it may not be much we aren't replacing them. There seems to be only one solution if we are in fact going to win this war, The Draft. It is bad and I don't like it but, this was something we should have thought about before we started this war. 50% of the country supports the war but, I don't see anyone running to the recruitment office to help win it. All those who support a war should be damn well prepared to fight for it and if neccessary die for it. It is not fair to our volunteers what we have done to them. We cannot half heartedly support a war and then send those who joined voluntarily before it and keep them in the army after their service is over, after their duty is over. Shame on you who supported the war and will now run away from the call to fight which you yourself have yelled. One glimmer of hope still stands and that is the army which Iraq will build themselves but, will it be enough and will it come before the Draft is reinstated, for my sake and yours I hope it will.

P.S Terry Shiavo has gone in peace to heaven let us mortals not piss on her grave.

Wow what a crazy week, i got enough hw to last me all saturday and sunday ..................... heehheheheheh i'll never do it thou ................ viva the slaces, they barely do any of their work and still somehow they manage to survive throug high school with a better GPA than others, god bless them.

Well i'm finallly back ................ wow i just take a week break and c what happens, the website is about dead and The_New_Kid becomes a lazy ass.
Omg is it to much to ask for a vacation!!?? even thou it wasn't really a vacation since Model UN conference in NY recuried me to study and stuff ........................ well if u care, it was crap since the whole school got discualify and 3 kids got send home for drinking (remember kids never drink and get caught by the hotel secutiry..... u'll get send home early and get kick out of IB)

One piece of advice before i go, never hesitate on proving the teacher wrong, especialy because: itz always fun, u waste time, and it looks great in a collage aplication that u proof ur teacher wrong..................well it really would.
